Next stop on the baseball journey for Garrett Wright looks like it will be the professional ranks.
The Jackson High School product was chosen in the eighth round by the Los Angeles Angels during the MLB draft in Philadelphia on Sunday, July 12. Wright was the sixth pick of Round 8 and the 229th overall pick of the draft.
MLB.com had Wright as the 190th-ranked prospect entering the draft after three outstanding seasons in college — the first two at Bowling Green in the Mid-American Conference and the last at the University of Tennessee in the SEC.
Wright, a 2023 Jackson grad who just turned 21 on July 5, is the first Stark County product picked in the MLB draft since Alliance native and Ohio State product Gavin Bruni was chosen in the 17th round of the 2024 draft by the Washington Nationals.
Wright was the 2024 MAC Freshman of the Year and 2025 MAC Defensive Player of the Year for Bowling Green. He coupled the latter award by leading the MAC in hitting with a .406 average. The 6-foot, 193-pound Wright is a catcher by trade but has the athleticism to play the outfield.
He transferred to Tennessee for the 2026 season and looked right at home. He led the Volunteers in batting average (.348) and OPS (1.033) as they went 38-22 and advanced to a regional.
Wright, a right-handed hitter who eventually batted leadoff for the Vols, totaled 17 doubles, a triple and nine home runs to go with 41 runs scored and 30 RBIs. He committed just one error in 179 total chances in the field.
Wright has another year of eligibility remaining at Tennessee. He expressed before the draft that he expected to turn pro if he was selected. The deadline for draftees to sign is July 27. MLB.com estimates Wright's draft slot value at $249,300.
