OFA, Edwards-Knox and Chateaugay all advanced into Saturday’s tripleheader of Section 10 Girls Basketball Championship games at SUNY Potsdam with semi-final wins Tuesday.

Top seeded OFA (11-9) joined second seeded Canton in the Class B finals at 2:45 p.m. with a 54-38 win over fourth seeded St. Lawrence Central (8-14) at home.

E-K (12-11) downed second seeded and no. 5 state-ranked Harrisville (18-5) 50-47 and defending champion Chateaugay (22-0) extended a perfect season with a 62-40 win over fifth seeded Hammond (11-10.)

OFA 54 - SLC 38: The third meeting between two NAC Central Division rivals was all about matchups.

Both teams had the ability to control the flow of the game with the fulltime, fullcourt press of the visiting Larries and OFA with a decided length advantage and the shot-creating and shot-making abilities of guard Amya LaFlair.

The Blue Devils did a creditable job dealing with the pressure which led to LaFlair gaining open court access to several runs at the rim in a 16-point effort. Lucy Guasconi dropped in 14 points operating in the low blocks.

OFA Coach Amy Lemke credited her team’s defense as another major factor.

“We did a good job against their press and I thought our defense was outstanding. Doug (Assistant Coach Doug Loffler), challenged the girls telling them that if they played good defense and rebounded well that we had a good chance to win,” said Coach Lemke. “The girls took the challenge and came out and played very hard.”

“Our rebounding was very good in the second half,” said Coach Loffler.

The Blue Devils took a 23-19 lead at the half after Brooke Irvine banked home two of three free throws after being fouled at the halftime horn. The Blue Devils made a pull-away bid in the third quarter opening a 31-23 lead. The Larries answered with nine straight points to take a 32-31 lead on two free throws by Brianna Williams after a baseline jumper by Stella Todd.

It proved to be the Larries final offensive surge in the game. Guasconi scored inside, LaFlair scored twice off steals and Anna Halpin buried a jumper from just inside the three-point line for a 38-32 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Guasconi, Ireland McNally and Lydia Power all scored off offensive rebounds to open the final quarter and the Devils went on to a 16-6 close-out.

Power and McNally combined for seven and six points for OFA and Irvine and Halpin each added two points. Mary Kate Dow and Stella Todd scored seven points to lead a balanced SLC offense which also featured five points from AJ Sweet, Zadia Sweeny and Williams and four from Leah Perry.

Chateaugay 62 - Hammond 40: Hammond seniors Mikayla Jones and Mia Tulley, who played together since elementary school and played on two state championship teams, shared a tearful embrace at midcourt as the time ran out on their hoop careers. The two seniors and their Red Devil teammates played all out all the way but the Bulldogs took the lead early, and like they have done all season, were never headed.

The Bulldogs opened to a 19-9 first quarter lead and methodically stretched it to 52-27 at the third quarter pole. The constant double teams of their defense dictated the flow of the action led by Khole Parmeter and Madison MaComb with four steals and Myra MaComb and Ireynn LaPlante with four blocks.

LaPante also knocked down five 3-pointers and grabbed four rebounds while scoring a game-high 28 points and MaComb and Parmeter tallied nine and eight points and grabbed four rebounds apiece. Peyton Parmeter and Madison McComb each netted six points and Gwendelyn Campbell each added one.

“Edwards-Knox will be a very tough team. They are well-coached and they have very good guards. They play excellent defense,” said Chateaugay Coach Chris Reynolds. “It was good for us to get Peyton Parmeter back. She missed the last six games after suffering an ankle injury.”

Addy Webster led Hammond with 14 points and five rebounds and Scarlett Ritchie scored nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Mia Tulley went 4-4 from the free throw line scoring her six points in the third quarter. Jocelyn Bush (5 rebounds) also scored six points and Mikayla Jones netted five.

“Chateaugay showed why they were undefeated tonight. They do everything well,” said Hammond Coach Alyssa Crosby. “The toughest thing about losing is watching the seniors hug each other because it was there last game. Mia Tulley played really well after coming back (from knee surgery). She really wanted to play more games.”

E-K 50 - Harrisville 47: The Cougars were denied in a series of close games games against high quality opponents in the regular season and used that experience to take a 36-23 halftime lead and then hold off a Harrisville comeback bid. Addy Foster (5 rebounds) sparked the Cougars’ offense with 26 points and netted three clutch free throws late in the game to cap an eight-point fourth quarter.

Zoie Hillabrant delivered nine points and nine rebounds and Avery Benson netted seven points with seven rebounds. Issy Foster (3 points) and Sophie Bullock (4 points) each grabbed five boards in a strong team rebounding effort and Sami Lottie tallied two points.

Violet Atkinson’s 21 points led Harrisville which also received nine points and nine rebounds from Kayla Kobylanski and eight points from Jaylin Fayette (4 rebounds). Hayley Schmitt and Addison Jackson added four and three points.

The semi-final matchups were set for Thursday’s Section 10 Class D2 boys hockey playoffs by quarter-final action on Tuesday. Third seeded St. Lawrence Central downed Tupper Lake 5-1 and will visit number 2 OFA on Thursday. The fourth seeded Islanders outscored Salmon River 8-4 and will visit no. 1 Malone Thursday.

Thursday’s winners will advance to Clarkson’s Cheel Center Monday for the D2 title game at 5 p.m.

Massena visits Potsdam Wednesday for Division I semi-final action. The winner faces top-seeded Canton for the D1 title on Monday at the Cheel Center at 8 p.m.
