POTSDAM — Potsdam Coach Todd Kaiser called a time out after defending champion OFA jumped out to a 3-0 lead in Friday’s Section 10 Class D Lacrosse Championship at SUNY Potsdam.
However, Kaiser, who was honored after the game by his peers with the Dave Bradman Memorial NAC Coach of the Year Award, did not call a timeout to adjust or reorganize. But to reassure his Sandstoners who went on to post a 10-8 victory for their program’s first sectional title and end OFA’s hopes of repeating last year’s historic march to the New York State Final Four.
The Sandstoners advanced to the state tournament and will play Massena for the overall Section 10 Championship.
“We just stuck to our game plan. This team has been through a lot of adversity losing two key players early in the season. We knew OFA has a great team and Coach Andrew Roddy has done a great job bringing that program along,” said Kaiser after the Sandstoners downed OFA for a third time in three two-goal games.
“All the coaches in Section 10 deserve a lot of credit for the way tonight’s game went. Every game was close. We have played in tough games all year and we have learned how to score the goals you need to win.”
The Sandstoners cut the deficit to 3-2 at the end of the first quarter and held a 5-4 lead in the second quarter when play was suspended by lightning with 2:42 to play. The Sandstoners defended the lead throughout the second half starting with three point blank saves by goaltender Jack Fahy. They claimed the win when Quinn McGaheron scored a man-up goal and Cam Fuller scored two goals on 2-1 breaks triggered by long passes by Fahy.
OFA’s NAC MVP Aidan O’Neil cut the difference to 10-8 on a brilliant rush and finish into the heart of the Potsdam defense and the Blue Devils regained possession after the Sandstoners ran the clock down to 33 seconds to play. The Blue Devils’ hopes for an 11th hour comeback ended when McGaheran intercepted a pass in front the Potsdam net and raced up field as time expired.
“All three of our games have been close and were great games. We had close games throughout the season. Tonight it all came down to penalties and turnovers at the end of the game and their goalie stood on his head. They are a a great team,” said OFA Coach Andrew Roddy. “We had a great year and we have great seniors. They were part of the best seasons of OFA lacrosse. They have been with me since I have been coaching. Aidan O’Neil has played for me since he was in eighth grade and all the seniors are part of great group. They buy in and work hard.”
Cam Fuller led the Sandstoners with four goals and one assist, Quinn McGaheran netted two goals with one assist and Drew Akin also scored twice. Other scoring contributions came from Finn Murray (1 goal, 1 assist), Graham Shelly (1 goal, 3 assists) and Aydin Weakfall (1 assist).
O’Neil tallied one goal with four assists to his school scoring record total and Casey Jacobs rifled home three goals with one assist. Kaden Bogart scored twice, Brody Barrett and John Lalonde also scored and Brandon Irvine passed out one assist.
Both Potsdam’s Fahy and OFA’s Jackson Thornhill finished with nine saves in stellar outings.
Massena 15 - PHS 5: The high-scoring express for the Class C Champion Raiders raced past the Class B representative Hornets for its eighth straight win and into the Overall Section 10 Championship. Rawennakien Silver scored three goals with two assists and Houston Johnson, Drew Smutz and Drystan Cole all struck for three goals and one assist.
Hunter Smith scored twice and Tristan General chipped in one goal and one assist to he support Keegan Stowell’s five saves in goal.
Killian Baker scored three goals for Plattsburgh and Ryan Campbell and Deacon Giroux each scored single goals. Layden Delarmde stopped 15 shots in goal.
