Oak Hills sent an early message in the Mojave River League title race Friday.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a five-run first inning and rode a grand slam from Jacob Webster to a 12-8 victory over defending league champion Sultana in the MRL opener for both teams. Oak Hills finished third in the league last season, while Sultana claimed the title.

Oak Hills wasted little time taking control. Seth Marcil highlighted the five-run first inning with a two-run double that scored Kelvin Lackey and Manuel Berumen Jr.

Sultana cut into the deficit in the third inning when LJ Borrego blasted a solo home run.

The Bulldogs broke the game open in the sixth inning when Webster launched a grand slam during a five-run frame. Manuel Berumen Jr. later added a run-scoring double.

Oak Hills stretched the lead to 12-3 in the seventh on an RBI double by Ayden Cooper.

Sultana rallied in its final at-bat. Borrego drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs and Conrad Munoz followed with another walk to make it a four-run game and bring the tying run to the plate. But Isac Gamez grounded to third baseman for the final out.

Webster finished 2 for 4 with four RBIs, two runs and a walk for Oak Hills. Marcil went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, a run, a walk and a stolen base, while Berumen added two hits and two RBIs.

Eric Sotelo earned the win, allowing three runs on six hits over 5⅔ innings.

For Sultana, Brady Van Hulzen went 2 for 4 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs, and Roy Arredondo finished 2 for 3 with a walk. Borrego also pitched five innings, allowing four earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.

The teams resume MRL action on March 18 will meet on April 1 and 3 to wrap up the season series.

Apple Valley 8, Serrano 5​


At Apple Valley, the Sun Devils kicked off MRL action with a victory over the Diamondbacks.

Mikey Fonville went 2 for 4 with an RBI to help lead Apple Valley; Jaden Padilla finished 2 for 3 with a run; and Wayde Munson went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run.

For Serrano, Bryce Thurber went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run.

Hesperia 11, Burroughs 8​


At Ridgecrest, Lincoln Snow led the Scorpions’ offense going 3 for 5 with a triple, two RBIs, three runs and a stolen base.

Josh Flores went 2 for 4 with a home run, three RBIs, and two runs; Jacob Castillo added two hits, two RBIs and two runs; and Cameron Cole chipped in two hits and a run.

Lucerne Valley 11, Silver Valley 5​


At Yermo, Jakob Barajas paced the Mustangs, going 3 for 5 with two runs and a stolen base.

Joaquin Landeros finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs, a walk, a run and a stolen base.

For Silver Valley, Justis Castro went 2 for 3 with two runs and two stolen bases.

At Apple Valley, Nathan Rudd struck out 10 over five innings, allowing the lone hit, while Bryson Lilly struck out two in two innings of relief to lead the Knights.

Aiden Carmona went 2 for 4 with three RBIs, two runs and a stolen base, and Gavin Ripley finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs, three runs and a stolen base.

University Prep 34, Mojave 0​


At Victorville, the Jaguars rolled to a lopsided victory behind a huge offensive performance in nonleague action.

Cole Stinnett finished 4 for 5 with four RBIs, four runs and three stolen bases and also struck out eight while allowing one hit over four innings. Drake Garcia went 3 for 3 with six RBIs and two runs.

University Prep 13, Sultana 7​


At Hesperia, Brie Villanueva powered the Jaguars with a home run, four RBIs and three runs scored in nonleague play.

Sophia Perea went 3 for 4 with a home run, three RBIs, a run and a stolen base; Paityn Zimmerman added two hits and two runs; and Saidy Gonzalez capped the scoring with a two-run home run in the seventh inning.

For Sultana, Lillian Ocegueda went 3 for 4 with two home runs, three RBIs and two runs scored; Maddie Rios added three hits and two runs; and Maricruz Venegas hit a home run.

Riverside Prep 21, Hesperia 2​


At Hesperia, Meeka Martinez led the Silver Knights going 4 for 4 with two RBIs, two runs and two stolen bases.

America Barajas went 3 for 5 with a home run, six RBIs, two runs and a stolen base; Alicia Cazares finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run; and Makayla Bustos went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and three runs.
