RAPID CITY — Sydney Terveen had a signature moment in her final game for O'Gorman, making her final two free throws to ice the Class AA state championship game and finish with 33 points as the Lady Knights beat top-seeded and previously-unbeaten Brandon Valley, 59-53.

Terveen's free throws iced the game, but she went 10-for-17 from the field and 7-for-9 from three. She made a couple from the NBA 3-point line, and was always ready when a big shot was needed.

"It's a good feeling being a senior and being able to leave it all out on the floor," Terveen said.

Terveen reached the 1,000-point plateau just a week before the regular season ended, and capped off her career at O'Gorman with a third consecutive state title. Her head coach, Kent Kolsrud, was in awe of his star's performance in her final game as a Lady Knight.

"That was a great player making great plays when the lights were shining brightest," Kolsrud said. "She was amazing. It was nothing that we called or anything that we did, she just made huge plays for us."

Even Mike Zerr, Brandon Valley's head coach, was amazed by the O'Gorman senior's performance.

"Sydney Terveen is a great player and had a senior moment tonight, and that's awesome," Zerr said.

Brandon Valley's standout senior, Alyvia Padgett, was limited to just 13 points on 5-for-14 shooting. She had seven points heading into the fourth, and scored her final six in the last 2:43.

"They did a great job of packing the paint and trying to force us to shoot," Zerr said. "She did a great job of distributing the basketball because that's who she is. Trying to get hers is not who she is."

O'Gorman's defensive gameplan was all surrounding Padgett, who scored 40 points when the two teams met in the season opener.

"Coach (Barry) Matthies leads our defense, he does a tremendous job," Kolsrud said. "Everything we did today started with Alyvia Padgett. We've got tremendous respect for her and she's a great player."

The Lady Knights led for all but 10 seconds of this game and took double-digit leads on five separate occasions. Zerr's Lynx squad always battled back and made it close, but couldn't get over the hump.

"I'm really, really proud of our team for continuing to battle through a ton of adversity tonight," Zerr said. "We continued to make runs right back at them, and that's who this team is."

Terveen added six rebounds to her big effort. Ruby Moore scored nine points for O'Gorman, senior Sadie Mehrman had eight, Ellie Meyer scored seven and London Backes had two.

The win was a bit of redemption for O'Gorman, which lost 63-54 at home to Brandon Valley to open the season. They really wanted that win back and felt they played poorly in that season opener, and the state title being on the line made the revenge that much sweeter.

"I think all year after that loss, people were like, 'Brandon's winning this. They beat them at the start of the season. They're going to walk through the championship,'" Mehrman said. "We just knew we didn't play our best, that we were more than that."
