Behind a stellar outing from starter Noah Kenney, the Washington Huskies cruised to a 7-2 series-opening win over the Northwestern Wildcats on Friday night.

Across a career-best 7 innings of work, Kenney allowed just one run (which came on a leadoff home run to third baseman Owen McElfatrick) and four baserunners on 3 hits and a walk while racking up a career-high 9 strikeouts to improve to 2-3 on the season with the victory. In relief, Carson Boesel finished the job after allowing a run on 4 hits with 2 strikeouts over the final 2 innings.

Kenney also got plenty of support from coach Eddie Smith's lineup, which strung together 11 hits on the day and gave him a big cushion to work with early, scoring 3 runs in the first inning. First baseman Daniel Porras opened the scoring with a run-scoring single in the first inning as he put together yet another strong day, going 3-for-5 with a run batted in and a run scored.

Third baseman Blake Wilson added to the outburst with a 2-for-4 day, which included a two-run triple in the third inning as part of a 3-run frame to help double the Husky lead. Shortstop Sam DeCarlo and catcher Colton Bower both collected a pair of hits, with the former adding an RBI and a run scored, while the latter also reached on a walk and scored a pair of runs.

Garrett Shearer took the loss for the Wildcats after he was unable to make it out of the second inning. He worked 1 1/3 innings and let up 3 runs on 3 hits with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts to drop to 0-2 on the season.

With the win, the Huskies improved to 11-14 on the season and 5-5 in Big Ten play. The two teams will return to the field on Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. PT for the second installment of their three-game series.
