The Washington Huskies got off to a fast start against the Oregon Ducks on Saturday night, but coach Eddie Smith's team couldn't hold the lead against the No. 13 team in the country in a 10-4 loss.
As part of a 2-for-3 day with a walk and 2 runs scored, star outfielder Jackson Hotchkiss remained red hot with a solo home run in the first inning as the Huskies scored a run in each of the first four frames, and found themselves up 4-1 after an RBI double from shortstop Sam DeCarlo. However, from that point on, it was all Ducks.
Specifically, it was all shortstop Maloney Maddox, whom the Huskies had no answer for all night long. He went 3-for-3 with 6 runs batted in and a pair of runs scored, which came on a two-run home run in the fifth inning and a solo shot in the eighth.
The Ducks also got significant contributions at the plate from right fielder Angel Laya, who went 2-for-5 with 3 runs batted in and 2 runs scored after launching a three-run home run in the seventh inning, and third baseman Drew Smith, who went 3-for-5 with an RBI and 2 runs scored.
Noah Kenney took the loss for the Huskies and dropped to 4-5 on the year, after he let up 5 runs on 8 hits with a walk and 8 strikeouts over 6 innings of work. He was relieved by Liam Lierman, who didn't fare much better over the next 1 2/3, letting up 5 runs on 5 hits with 2 strikeouts.
Leo Uelman earned his second win of the year after working a perfect fifth inning in relief of starter Collin Clarke, who let up 4 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits and 2 walks with 3 strikeouts over 4 frames.
With the loss, the Huskies dropped to 20-26 on the year and 9-14 in Big Ten play. They'll look to avoid being swept by the Ducks on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. PT.
