JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - Matt Sarbo, Trent Hoover and Ty Morrison did all they could to impress in their Pitt-Johnstown debuts at the Sports Center Friday night.

The only disappointing aspect of the evening was who they faced.

Hoover recorded a pin, while Sarbo and Morrison notched technical falls as the sixth-ranked Mountain Cats routed No. 9 Ashland 32-10 in a dual in which the Eagles sat three of their ranked wrestlers.

“I don’t control what the other team does,” said Hoover, a redshirt freshman. “I train to be the best in the country, and whoever they send out, I’m going to handle business.”

A Penn Cambria graduate who is ranked 18th nationally, Hoover did just that, cradling Gavin Nelson and pinning him 52 seconds into their 165-pound bout. Nelson filled in for No. 11 Nate Barrett.

Sarbo, a two-time junior college national champion ranked 11th, was supposed to face No. 10 Hayden Kuhn at 149.

Instead, he scored a 17-2 technical fall over Brock Durbin, a 2025 national qualifier who bumped up from 141 pounds.

“I obviously want to wrestle the best guys in my weight,” Sarbo said, “so when they move guys around like that, it’s a little disappointing. I would love to get those opportunities.”

Morrison, a true freshman, beat Hayden Flynn 19-1 at 174. Flynn filled in for No. 7 Sevi Garza.

“You treat every match the same, whether it’s a national champ or somebody that’s not,” Pitt-Johnstown coach Tyler Reinhart said. “I think they did a good job getting composed and getting the job done.”

The Mountain Cats (2-0) won seven of the 10 bouts, picking up bonus points in six of those.

“We didn’t have everybody in (the lineup), but that doesn’t mean you’re not going to go out there and put your best effort forward,” Ashland coach Colt Sponseller said. “Sickness, injury, some other personal things (led to the absences). No excuses. You’ve got to wrestle the 10 guys you’ve got and put your best effort forward. They’re a very talented team, and they showed that tonight.”

Isaiah Vance capped the dual in a big way, as the No. 1 heavyweight in the country used a blast double to overpower No. 15 Wyatt Bailey on his way to a second-period fall.

“He’s really separated himself already,” Reinhart said of Vance. “He normally has close matches with that kid, and he just went out and fired.”

Trevon Gray got the Mountain Cats off to a good start, as the nation’s top-ranked 125-pounder scored a pair of first-period takedowns in a 7-3 victory over No. 12 Luke Acuna. Pitt-Johnstown had a team point deducted when Gray underhand tossed his headgear to the bench at the conclusion of the match.

Pitt-Johnstown’s Chad Ozias notched an 11-4 victory over Rylen Campbell at 141 pounds, and Cooper Warshel scored seven takedowns – finishing almost every shot he took – in a 21-6 first-period technical fall over Mack Allen at 157.

Tyson Cook jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the first period, but his offense dried up, and Ashland’s Donovan Paes rallied for a 12-9 win in the sudden-victory period at 133 to give the Eagles their only lead at 3-2.

Ashland’s other victories came at 184 – where Fletcher Rose beat Teague Conover 17-4 – and 197 – where Peyton Lemon used a third-period takedown to beat Brad Morrison 4-2 in a ranked matchup.
