NL West contender 'should not be ignored' in Tarik Skubal trade bidding originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Since the Detroit Tigers have the worst record in the American League, the odds that they trade their superstar starting pitcher have risen.
Left-hander Tarik Skubal, who is recovering from surgery to remove loose bodies in his throwing elbow, could be on the move.
The glaring question is which contending team will offer the Tigers the best trade package for the back-to-back AL Cy Young Award winner.
The Athletic's Jim Bowden wrote Monday that a club from the NL West should be considered one of the top contenders for Skubal's services.
"[San Diego] Padres president of baseball operations A.J. Preller is always in on acquiring superstar players when they become available and is never afraid to trade his top prospects to acquire these types of players, as he did with Juan Soto and Mason Miller," Bowden wrote.
In a division with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Padres need to make at least a few moves at the trade deadline if they want to make a deep postseason run.

As mentioned, Preller is not afraid to offload prospects from the farm system to acquire the players he wants.
"Preller might even consider offering his top prospect, catcher Ethan Salas, if he can get a deal done straight-up and he feels like he could win a title this season," Bowden added. "The Padres should not be ignored if there is a Skubal sweepstakes."
Adding Skubal to their rotation would increase San Diego's World Series hopes and release just a little bit of pressure from an underperforming offense.
