Tarik Skubal trade rumor links Cy Young Award winner to NL West contender originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Even with three months remaining until the Major League Baseball trade deadline, the Tarik Skubal rumors are heating up.
Now that the Detroit Tigers are tied for last place in the AL Central, there's a lot of ground to make up to secure one of the three Wild Card spots.
Skubal, the back-to-back AL Cy Young Award winner, is on an expiring contract and could be moved for prospects and/or MLB-ready players. Realistically, Detroit has slim odds of re-signing the left-hander.
That's why The Athletic's Jim Bowden believes an NL West team is a potential landing spot for Skubal. The club's front office is usually aggressive each season.
"We all know team president A.J. Preller is always going to be in the middle of a major trade, and he’s always willing to trade the best prospects in his cabinet, including his top three pitching prospects, Kruz Schoolcraft, Miguel Mendez and Kash Mayfield," Bowden wrote about the San Diego Padres.
Preller and the Padres showed their willingness to dish out prospects last year, trading the highly touted Leo De Vries to the Athletics in exchange for flamethrowing closer Mason Miller.

Making a trade for Skubal will require a similar level of prospect capital. However, with each passing month, the Tigers hold on to their prized ace, the more likely the return package for him would be smaller.
San Diego is in win-now mode, and making a trade like this could help push them to defeat the Atlanta Braves or Los Angeles Dodgers in a postseason series.
