The 2025 NFL draft featured plenty of surprising moves, and one of them took place late in the first round when the New York Giants traded up to the No. 25 overall pick to select quarterback Jaxson Dart. In the wake of the trade, NFL insider Albert Breer revealed why the team felt they had to move up the board to land Dart.

Armed with the No. 3 pick in the draft, the Giants were initially expected to be interested in a top quarterback prospect. They ended up locking in defensive end Abdul Carter, only to trade back into the first round to snag Dart. After the pick, general manager Joe Schoen explained his rationale for the decision.

"He's in a really good spot where he can come in and he can sit behind a couple of veteran quarterbacks and learn and doesn't have to be thrown out there right away," Schoen said. "I think from a developmental standpoint and the ability to grow, I think it's a perfect situation for a young quarterback."

While the Giants did well to assert themselves and make this move up the board, could they have simply stayed put at the No. 34 pick early in the second round and had Dart fall to them? While Breer thinks it's possible, he explained two reasons why he believes New York decided to trade up instead.

"They were concerned about the Rams, who have an older quarterback, that the Rams might take a quarterback at 26," Breer said on "The Breer Report." "My understanding is that's not the case, the Rams were not going to take a quarterback at 26."

"The other piece of this is, if you're sitting there at 34 on Friday and Jaxson Dart is still on the board, well now the Browns are in position to auction the 33rd pick, so you're in competition with other teams for the 33rd pick."

In addition to Dart, the Giants also have Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, and Tommy DeVito on their roster at the quarterback position. While New York used a first round pick on Dart, he's not expected to be the team's Week 1 starter, as Wilson appears to be in line for the starting gig.
