NFL Insider Predicts Steelers Miss Playoffs, Aaron Rodgers Changes Mind About Retirement originally appeared on SportsNet Pittsburgh. Add SportsNet Pittsburgh as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Aaron Rodgers is officially back with the Pittsburgh Steelers and he claims that the 2026 NFL season will be his final one.
NFL senior writer Conor Orr wrote Tuesday that he not only doesn't believe the 42-year-old, but he thinks Steelers fans should be prepared for an underwhelming 2026 campaign.
"With gap-year needs potentially developing for the Rams and Vikings, among other teams with head coaches Rodgers admires and would like to work with, the quarterback will walk away from Pittsburgh after a nine-win, nonplayoff campaign and into a summer of exploring other interests before eventually landing in training camp with either the Packers, Rams, Vikings, 49ers or Cardinals," Orr said.
If Pittsburgh finishes with nine victories, that would (barely) keep its two-decade-plus streak of non-losing seasons alive.
The Steelers last missed the playoffs during the 2022 campaign when they went 9-8-1.
Despite winning the AFC North last season under longtime head coach Mike Tomlin for the first time in five years, it was another early postseason exit for the Black and Gold. Even with its streak of .500 or better seasons, Pittsburgh hasn't won a playoff contest since the 2016 campaign.
Rodgers passed his Green Bay Packers predecessor Brett Favre in NFL longevity last season with his 21st year in the league and is readying for his 22nd campaign. Orr believes that the four-time MVP will be back for more in 2027 though for what would be his 23rd season, which would notably tie Tom Brady's run.
