CAMDEN, N.J. -- The Philadelphia 76ers have received some fantastic play from their backcourt duo of Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe as they have played off each other well throughout the season.

Maxey, an All-Star starter, is averaging 28.9 points and 6.7 assists along with 4.1 rebounds while Edgecombe, the Rising Stars Challenge MVP, is averaging 15.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.0 assists. The two have been an explosive duo on the offensive end and has given opposing coaches nightmares trying to come up with schemes and ways to slow them down.

New addition Cam Payne, who played with Maxey in the 2023-24 season, gave his thoughts on the leap Maxey has taken in the league.

"That man took a crazy jump!" Payne laughed about Maxey. I feel like he took a crazy jump from last year to this year. I feel like he excelled his game even more coming into this season just watching the shots he takes. Obviously, he’s been taking those shots, but the efficiency is crazy! He’s actually changed his game from the last two years I was here, so, I mean, that’s really big time. He really took a huge step."

While Maxey took a big leap from the last time Payne was here, the rookie Edgecombe has maybe played better than some would have imagined. Of course, high expectations come with being the No. 3 overall pick, but the Baylor star has been terrific as Payne has observed from afar.

"Oh, man. He’s a dog!" Payne added. "I’ve been watching from afar, though, but actually being up close, like, that man’s a dog. He plays well. He attacks the rim crazy, but I mean, it kinda looks like he’s been in the league longer than him just being a rookie."

The Sixers will rely on Payne to be a ball-handler for the bench unit, but one can bet that coach Nick Nurse will give a lineup of him, Maxey, and Edgecombe a look in the very near future. That is going to be a big aspect to watch going forward.

Either way, the Sixers will continue to hope Maxey and Edgecombe can continue to be explosive to lead them on either end of the floor and help them get into the playoffs. Philadelphia is currently the No. 6 seed in the East and will look to make a climb up the standings.
