WASHINGTON -- Philadelphia 76ers guard VJ Edgecombe has continued to show that he is no ordinary rookie. Despite being only 20 years old, Edgecombe has stepped onto a team that focuses on contention and has averaged 16. points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.1 assists while shooting 44% from the floor and 36.2% from deep.
As the Sixers head down the stretch, there is still work to be done to earn a playoff spot, but either way, Edgecombe is in the middle of playing high-pressure, high-intensity games which will then help him and give him a bit of a preview for what the playoffs are like.
With that being said, Sixers star Tyrese Maxey isn't worried about the rookie finding a way to be impactful in the playoffs. He has handled it like a poised veteran.
"I told him a little bit, but he's ready," Maxey said after a win over the Washington Wizards on Wednesday. "I just want him to go out there and experience it. My biggest thing is that I've been preaching him all year, like his demeanor, his maturity has been really helpful for us and really good for us to see that and that he'll be ready. He’s the least of our worries."
There is just so many positive things Edgecombe does on the floor that already help a team succeed. The Sixers are better for it whenever he is out there with them.
"When VJ doesn't, like, shoot the ball well, he's not scoring as much, he's always impacting the game," Maxey added. "Whether it's defense, whether it's getting offensive rebounds, whether it's assist numbers, it’s all that, man."
To Maxey's point, Edgecombe already finds a way to put his imprint on the game every time out even when he isn't scoring. He is finding a way to make plays for others, go to work on the defensive end, rebound the ball, and space the floor for the stars to operate. He just knows how to play the game and that will help him in the playoffs.
"His energy, he always does that," finished Maxey. "That's something like a sign of a really, really, really good player. Somebody really special, because he doesn't have to score the ball to be effective, and we're gonna need that. We're gonna need him score, but he's gonna do everything else as well."
