The 2026 NBA Finals got off to a heartbreaking start for the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night at Frost Bank Center. The New York Knicks secured a 105-95 Game 1 victory, marking their 12th consecutive playoff win, with Jalen Brunson dropping 30 points despite battling through injuries.

For the Spurs, it was a tough pill to swallow. Victor Wembanyama finished with 26 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks but shot just 6-of-21 from the field and coughed up six turnovers. De’Aaron Fox, still hobbled by a lingering right ankle issue, managed only 7 points on 3-of-13 shooting across 38 minutes.

But the night’s most famous moment had nothing to do with X’s and O’s, because a brave fan’s chaotic attempt to take a selfie with Wembanyama stole the spotlight. However, new shaky footage from the fan’s POV has gone viral online, showing that the fan failed to take a selfie with the 22-year-old.

Viral new video captures fan’s failed selfie mission with Victor Wembanyama

With 6:28 left in the game and New York leading 92-86, a fan ran onto the Frost Bank Center court with his phone out. He stopped near the three-point line to take a selfie with Wembanyama before two security guards grabbed him. The incident was caught on the live broadcast and has since turned viral online.

Fans thought he successfully took a selfie with the Spurs center. But a second video, shared by @BrickCenter_ on X, shows the fan’s actual perspective. This footage is blurry and messy. Since Wembanyama is 7-foot-4 tall, he didn’t even fit in the camera frame. The fan only managed to record a single second of unusable footage before being pulled away.

The Game stopped for about a minute and restarted with a jump ball, which Wembanyama won. On the air, ESPN broadcaster Mike Breen said, “A fan just ran on the floor and wants to take a selfie. Security quickly takes him away.”

Guards escorted the fan out through a baseline tunnel. He now faces a likely lifetime NBA ban and potential criminal charges, as entering a restricted stadium area is illegal under Texas law. Ultimately, the video just shows how badly the stunt failed.

Fans feel for the guy who ran to get Victor Wembanyama selfie

The reactions on X were brutal, with some feeling sorry for him.

One user wrote, “Bro should’ve used the ticket money to getting a better phone. And only got like 2/3 of Wemby.”

Another added, “Banned from Spurs arena during the start of Wemby Prime for a shaky video that doesn’t even capture Wemby properly, gotta be one of the biggest Ls in the 21st century.”

A third wasn’t sugarcoating the fallout, noting, “He spent hella cash, did all that, now he’s arrested, gonna have criminal charges pressed on him, have a lifetime ban from the arena… and he STILL didn’t get a good shot of Wemby.”

The fourth viewer dropped the coldest take, penning, “Likely got banned for a shaky and blurry video, bros in aura debt now.”

A random X user claimed, “He is a brave man. Genuinely feeling sorry for him.”

As of publishing, the NBA has not issued any official statement regarding fines or formal disciplinary action against the fan. However, many on social media think he will likely face a lifetime ban.
