Brooklyn Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez was the man that the Nets decided was the right one to lead the team as the franchise was navigating its current rebuild. Fernandez accepted Brooklyn's offer and while the organization has made it clear that developing young players is the name of the game, he understands that this is a team for him to grow as well.
"Yeah, it's been growth, and I've had to learn how to be in this position. Obviously, when you get the job, you always believe that you're ready for it, and even though you've coached and you've been a head coach before, probably basketball is the easiest part of it," Fernandez said during his appearance on the "Nets Pod" with Sarah Kustok. Fernandez finished his second year as a head coach this past season, but the Nets finished with just a 20-62 record.
"But then you have the head coaching duties and what it means, and the amount of people that you're responsible for, and the amount of people that you've got to touch every day," Fernandez continued. "I think that's been a great journey so far. I've learned, I've grown, and the best thing is being around good people. This organization is built and is still building the right things for the right things, and we believe that we'll keep taking those positive steps."
Fernandez, 43, currently has a 46-118 record as the head coach of the Nets, but that isn't entirely on him given that Brooklyn is focused on the future, especially after taking five players in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft. Despite the fact that the Nets have not won much in the past two years, Fernandez has been recognized by coaches around the NBA for the work he has done and how hard the players play on a game-by-game basis.
"As I've said from Day 1 with Jordi, it's his honest approach. I think that goes a long way with staff and players, right? You know exactly where you stand. You know what's expected of you," general manager Sean Marks said of Fernandez during his exit interview in April. While the focus will be on improving the team as much as possible, Fernandez understands that his growth as a coach is also important.
