The Philadelphia 76ers deserve a ton of credit for the work they've done this offseason.
From the blockbuster trade for Jaylen Brown to the signings of Dean Wade, Anfernee Simons, and others, it's safe to say Mike Gansey and company are doing a phenomenal job.
NBA analyst Sam Quinn of CBS Sports agrees, grading Philadelphia's offseason an A.
"Right away, we have a team to applaud for maximizing the resources at its disposal," Quinn wrote. "The 76ers turned the No. 22 overall pick into LaBaron Philon, a prospect many mocked in the lottery range. They turned one nontaxpayer mid-level exception into two valuable rotation players: Dean Wade and Anfernee Simons."
Quinn continued, "And of course, they turned two first-round picks and one of the worst contracts in the NBA in Paul George into a Second Team All-NBA player at the same position who is six years younger in Jaylen Brown."
The 76ers, along with the Charlotte Hornets, were the only Eastern Conference teams graded this highly.
No one should argue against applauding the 76ers regardless of one's opinion on the team.
Turning George and draft capital into an All-NBA wing is easily the highlight of the summer (at least thus far). Brown plays hard on both ends of the floor while averaging more than 28 points for the Boston Celtics last season. There's no denying that trade is a home run.
The other moves, however, come with their flaws, but first let's address the positives of them. Wade is a lockdown defender, Simons is an off-the-bench spark plug, Ariel Hukporti will help bolster the center rotation, and Philon looked like a steal based on his play in NBA Summer League.
The downsides to each are concerning, though, as Wade offers little offensively, Simons is rather poor on defense, Hukporti is unproven in a more significant role, and clearly 21 general managers passed on Philon for one reason or another.
This is why Quinn likely couldn't give the 76ers' offseason an A+, but if the lesser acquisitions pan out the way Gansey envisions, much success is coming to Philadelphia in the near future.
