Nathan Fleenor was approved to be Harrison High School's next athletic director at the EVSC School Board Meeting on July 6.

Fleenor will remain in his role as the Warriors’ boys basketball coach. It is a role he has occupied since 2016.

This change comes after Sara Loete was approved to be the athletic director in May. She has since accepted a new position as the EVSC’s director of student conduct and safety.

Familiarity

Fleenor is a longtime member of the Harrison community, having joined the school’s staff in 2003 to teach social studies. His involvement in athletics is extended; Fleenor has been an assistant for the softball, baseball, and basketball programs, where he has spent most of his time.

Fleenor has seen many faces over the years at Harrison. He has connected with the staff, with the students and parents.

He will take what he has learned from these interactions and pour it into this new opportunity.

“I’ve learned from a lot of great coaches, athletic directors and administrators through those years,” Fleenor said. “I love everything about the Harrison community. This is something that I’ve always wanted to do. I’m excited about being able to do that and continue coaching basketball.”

This was an opportunity, Fleenor said, that he had worked towards over the years. He looks forward to strengthening his relationship with the Harrison community in this larger capacity while leading the athletic programs in a promising direction.

Relationship building

That is the key for Fleenor: building relationships. It is something he has observed over the years to be an integral piece to all of this. Fleenor looks to not only create an environment with successful representatives for Harrison in the present, but also for the future.

“We’ve had some really good athletic directors over the years that have build relationships and worked well with coaches,” Fleenor said. “I remember when I started coaching, there were coaches that were great for me to learn from. That’s kind of what it is about, learning from each other and building those relationships.”

Fleenor wants to see a camaraderie and togetherness among his student athletes. He wants Harrison’s feeder programs to get a better sense of what being a Warrior looks like.

And as he tries to juggle these responsibilities as athletic director and basketball coach, he will carry that thought with him throughout the process.

“First and foremost, I am going to work hard and communicate well,” Fleenor said. “It all starts with relationships and being able to build our athletic programs. Continue the ones that are doing well and the ones with newer coaches and things like that.”

Fleenor is a familiar face to the community, which helps his adaptation. But what is his message to them moving forward as he takes on this role?

He not only shares his excitement, but Fleenor also has some promises to make.

“I can guarantee that I’m going to work hard and that I’m going to communicate well,” Fleenor said. “I’m going to do the best I can for Harrison, the community, and all of the athletic programs.”
