Columbia Academy has turned to another former Bulldog to replace Pernell Knox as athletic director.

Drew Pirtle has been hired as Columbia Academy's new AD, the school announced on June 5.

Pirtle, a 2006 Columbia Academy graduate, returns after spending two seasons as boys basketball coach at South Gibson. He'd previously spent five years at Jackson Christian, coaching middle school basketball while also working as associate athletic director.

“To come home and serve my alma mater as Athletic Director is an incredible opportunity. This place helped shape who I am and I’m grateful for the trust placed in me to lead our athletic department," Pirtle said.

"I can’t wait to get to work with our student-athletes and coaches, as we build on a strong foundation and pursue an even brighter future together on behalf of this community. CA has always been special to me and I’m excited for my family to experience it as well."

Pirtle went 42-23 in his two seasons leading South Gibson boys basketball, winning a pair of District 13-3A titles while reaching the TSSAA state quarterfinals this past season and earning district coach of the year honors. Pirtle also brings collegiate coaching experience to CA, having worked as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Houghton College

Following his time at CA, Pirtle graduated from Freed-Hardeman University and later received a Master of Arts in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University Irvine.

“Drew is passionate about athletics and how it can be used to further our Christian mission at Columbia Academy," CA President Dr. James A. Thomas said. "He’s an energetic leader, a strong communicator, and devoted to his faith. He brings a strong record of success and a deep understanding of athletics at multiple levels. He’s well prepared for this role and ready to get to work for our students and coaches.”

Pirtle replaces Knox, who was fired in February after spending the last decade leading Columbia Academy athletics. Knox remained in his role through the end of the school year.
