We are just under three weeks from college hockey's Selection Sunday, and the Spartans remain in good position for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
College Puck NXT released their latest bracketology update following this past weekend's games, and the Spartans are still slated as a No. 1 seed. In this latest batch of bracketology, Michigan State is the No. 1 seed in the Loveland Region.
Michigan State is projected to play No. 4 seed UConn in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. If they were to win that game, they'd then play the winner of No. 2 seed Denver and No. 3 seed Cornell.
Michigan State is currently listed as the No. 2 team nationally in the NPI rankings, which would put them as one of the four No. 1 seeds. There is a notable difference, though, in earning the No. 1 overall seed -- which is currently in rival Michigan's hands -- as that top spot would most likely face a team that only qualified for the NCAA Tournament after receiving an autobid from their conference tournament. In this bracket projection, that's Sacred Heart (ranked No. 31 in NPI) -- which is significantly lower than who Michigan State is slated to play in this projection (UConn is No. 15 in NPI).
Michigan State wraps up the regular season this week against Minnesota, with a pair of games on the road. The Spartans could jump ahead of idle Michigan should they play well out in the Twin Cities this weekend.
