Morocco face key decisions as Regragui era nears its end

Morocco coach Walid Regragui is preparing to resign this week after failing to win AFCON 2025 according to multiple reports.

End of the road for Regragui

Multiple reports confirmed that head coach Walid Regragui is ready to submit his resignation bringing his spell with the Atlas Lions to end.

Regragui’s position has weakened in recent weeks following Morocco’s failure to lift the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 despite hosting the tournament.

All signs point to an official separation being confirmed during the current week which would allow the federation to move quickly and announce new head coach.

Communication breakdown at the top

According to reports, communication between Regragui & Fouzi Lekjaa president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation has completely stopped since the AFCON final.

There has been no coordination between the two side regarding the upcoming international window during which Morocco are scheduled to play friendly matches against Ecuador & Paraguay.

As a result, technical director Fathi Jamal was tasked with preparing an expanded list of 55 player.

Several reports also indicated that there were those within the Moroccan Football Federation who urged Regragui to officially submit his resignation especially after French media reports indicated that his departure was a foregone conclusion.

Regragui’s numbers tell a strong story

Despite the expected exit, Regragui leaves behind impressive statistics. The 50 year-old coach led Morocco in 49 match recording 36 win, 8 draw and 5 defeats with average of 2.37 points per game.

Under his leadership, Morocco scored 100 goal and conceded only 21 while also achieving a historic run of 32 consecutive victories.

Regragui also guided the national team to a fourth-place finish at World Cup 2026, one of the best results in the country’s history.

Possible successors and missed options

The Moroccan FA is expected to appoint new coach shortly, with Mohamed Ouahbi emerging as the leading candidate. Ouahbi recently guided Morocco’s youth team to win the U20 World Cup strengthening his position as a long-term solution.
