MLB insider reveals Tigers trade update with big Tarik Skubal implications originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Detroit Tigers are currently one of the worst teams in MLB, sitting at 27-39 in the regular season. But thanks to an incredibly weak AL field, they're only 5.5 games out of a Wild Card spot.
Thanks to winning five of their last six games, the vibe around the Tigers has shifted from doom and gloom to some optimism amid a rough 2026 season.
As MLB insider Jon Morosi of MLB Network shares, the latest on a potential deadline sale is a very interesting update that has some big implications on a possible Tarik Skubal trade this summer.
Tigers trade update has big Tarik Skubal implications
"I believe the Tigers ultimately will listen to trade offers for some pending free agents, but they are not in a hurry to make moves," Morosi shared. "They have won 5 of 6. Their playoff chances have increased to 23.7%, per @fangraphs. Lots of time until Aug. 3."
While this update from Morosi doesn't explicitly name Skubal, or any one player, the mention of pending free agents being the kind of players the Tigers will listen to trade calls on is very noteworthy.
Skubal is going to be a free agent following the 2026 season, and it's a huge reason why he's even being brought up in trade talks this season.
If the Tigers falter from now until the August 3 trade deadline, then Skubal might be on the move. But, for now, it appears as if Skubal isn't going anywhere, with the Tigers being very patient when it comes to selling this season.

This decision makes a lot of sense, as the weak AL Wild Card field makes it worth waiting to see if Skubal can come back healthy, and the Tigers can go on a run to earn a playoff spot again.
With how good this team can be if fully healthy, it would be a mistake to sell Skubal now or too early before knowing for certain they are well outside of a playoff spot.
But, this report from Morosi makes it clear the Tigers, thanks to believing they still have a chance, are going to refrain from any trades for now.
Skubal will stick with the Tigers, likely through the rest of June, which should give him time to return to the Majors and showcase himself for a trade, or help the Tigers return to the postseason hunt this season.
