Tre Gomillion is heading back to Cleveland State to officially begin his coaching career.

The Missouri basketball alum, who followed Dennis Gates from Cleveland State to Mizzou ahead of the 2022-23 season and has been a graduate assistant for the Tigers for the past two years, was named as an assistant coach at Cleveland State on Tuesday.

Cleveland State is coached by former Mizzou and Gates assistant Rob Summers.

Gomillion, after starting his career with Gordon State College in his home state Georgia, spent three seasons as a player at CSU under Gates before finishing his career at Mizzou.

Gomillion made the NCAA Tournament with the Vikings and was named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year in the 2020-21 season.

The 6-foot-4 guard became a fan favorite as sixth-man spark for Mizzou in Gates’ first season with the Tigers, helping the team to its first NCAA Tournament win in more than a decade. In 24 total games with Missouri, Gomillion averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game.

Gomillion rejoined Mizzou as a graduate assistant ahead of the 2024-25 season. He has been on the Tigers’ staff for the past two years.

Gates predicted a coaching career for Gomillion while he was a team captain for the Tigers.

“He’ll be on our staff one day,” Gates said Feb 21, 2023, after Missouri beat Mississippi State in overtime. “I’m just being honest with you.”

The Vikings went 11-22 in Summers’ first season in charge, including a 6-14 mark in Horizon League play.

Missouri has an open assistant coaching position on its staff, after one-year assistant Steve Wright joined Penny Hardaway’s staff at Memphis.

Multiple reports have indicated that the open position at Mizzou will be filled by Jason Crowe Sr., the father of five-star high school commit Jason Crowe Jr., but that has not yet officially been announced by the university.
