Miles Russell of Jacksonville Beach continued his torrid play in the U.S. Junior Amateur on July 24 at the Saucon Valley Country Club Old Course in Bethlehem, Pa., turning in a flawless performance against an opponent who already has earned a college All-Conference award.
Russell, 17, who still has one more year before he arrives on the Florida State campus, dispatched rising college sophomore Dylan Boenning of Washington State 6 and 5 in their morning quarterfinal match, marking the first time Russell has advanced to the semifinals in four appearances in the U.S. Junior Am.
In the other quarterfinal match involving an area player, Tyler Mawhinney of Fleming Island was all square with Sohan Patel of Weston through 15 holes. The winner plays Russell at 2:45 p.m., and the semifinal winners face off in the 36-hole championship match on July 25, at a time to be determined.
Russell won his first two holes against Boenning with a birdie and a par, halved the next five, then took command of the match by winning Nos. 8 and 9 with birdies. He then won Nos. 10 and 12 with birdies and closed out the match by halving No. 13 with a birdie.
Russell did not lose a hole to Boenning, a first-team All-West Coast Conference selection as a freshman for the Cougars. Russell was 7-under in 13 holes and did not make a bogey.
Russell's performance so far has been dominant. He shot 6-under 136 to earn co-medalist with two other players, and in his first four matches this week has won 23 holes, lost only six and has a cumulative score of 16-under par in 60 holes. He has reached the 18th hole in a match only once.
Russell is the seventh-ranked amateur player in the world.
The other semifinal match, which begins at 2:35 p.m., will be Noah Maclauchlan of Moseley, Va., vs. Cooper Moore of New Zealand. Maclauchlan defeated Kuan Zhou of Houston 4 and 2 and Moore topped countryman Ryan Xie 2 and 1 in an All-Kiwi quarterfinal.
Mawhinney fell behind early to Patel, a future Vanderbilt teammate (Mawhinney enrolls this fall; Patel, of Weston, will follow next year). Patel won Nos. 1 and 3 and carried that 2-up lead through seven holes.
Mawhinney broke through with a birdie at the par-4 eighth to win his first hole, then pulled even with a birdie at the par-4 10th. Patel went back in front with a birdie at the par-4 13th, but Mawhinney squared the match on the next hole with an eagle at the par-5 14th.
Patel has been Mawhinney's nemesis in the past. He ousted Mawhinney from the round of 16 in last year's U.S. Junior in Dallas, 1-up, and has won the last two FHSAA Class 2A state individual championships, with Mawhinney finishing second both times, by one shot last fall and by four in 2024.
Mawhinney won the Class 3A state individual title in 2023, leading Fleming Island High School to the first of back-to-back team championships.
Golf Channel will air portions of the afternoon semifinals on July 24 from 4-6 p.m., then on a tape-delay basis from 8-10 p.m.
