Miles Russell of Jacksonville Beach stumbled at the end but still posted an under-par score in the first round of U.S. Junior Amateur stroke-play qualifying on July 20 at the Saucon Valley Grace Course in Bethlehem, Pa.
Russell, the top-ranked junior player in the U.S., birdied three of his first four holes, then bogeyed three of his last four for a 1-under 69. He's tied for 11th but is only four shots behind leader Sohan Patel of Weston, who shot 5-under 66 at the Old Course.
Tyler Mawhinney of Fleming Island had four birdies and four bogeys at the Grace Course and is even par, in a tie for 19th.
The top 64 players after the second round on July 21 will qualify for match play, beginning on July 22.
The other area players in the field have some work to do if they want to make match play. Jay Huntley of Jacksonville Beach (75, Grace Course) and Charlie Hipp of St. Johns (76, Old Course) are tied for 122nd. Phillip Dunham of Ponte Vedra Beach (77, Old Course) is tied for 158th and Easton Oliva of Ponte Vedra (80, Grace Course) is tied for 230th.
Charlie Woods shot 76 at the Old Course and is tied for 122nd. Defending champion Hamilton Coleman struggled with a 76 at the Grace Course and is tied for 158th.
