The First Coast is sending perhaps its strongest contingent ever to the U.S. Junior Amateur July 20-25, reflective of the depth of junior golf in the area.
Led by Miles Russell of Jacksonville Beach, Florida, the No. 7-ranked player on the World Amateur Rankings and the top-ranked junior amateur in the U.S., seven area players will converge on the Saucon Valley Country Club's Grace Course and Old Course in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, beginning with 36 holes of stroke-play qualifying July 20-21.
The top 64 players from a field of 312 will advance to match play on July 22.
Russell, 17, reached the quarterfinals last year at the Trinity Forest Golf Club in Dallas. He also got to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.
It's been a productive summer so far for Russell. He qualified for the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills with Charley Woods as his caddie and then went on to make the cut. He was later named to the U.S. Walker Cup team for the matches Sept. 5-6 against Great Britain & Ireland, at the Lahinch Golf Club in Ireland.
Two other area players were exempt to the the U.S. Junior field, Tyler Mawhinney of Fleming Island and Easton Oliva of Ponte Vedra Beach. Mawhinney, who will enroll at Vanderbilt next month, got to the second round of the Junior Amateur last year. Oliva is coming off a victory in the Florida Junior Boys.
Four area players qualified for the championship: James Nagle and Phillip Dunham of Ponte Vedra Beach, Jay Huntley of Jacksonville Beach and Charlie Hipp of St. Johns. Nagle (67 at the Bayberry Hills Country Club in Massachusetts) and Dunham (66 at the Heathrow Country Club) tied for medalist in their qualifiers. Huntley tied for third with a 71 at Delray Dunes in Boynton Beach and Hipp tied for third with a 68 at the Country Club of Ocala.
Also in the field are defending champion and 2024 Junior Players champion Hamilton Coleman, who tees off at 12:48 p.m. in the first round at No. 10 of the Grace Course; and Charlie Woods, who starts at 8:06 a.m. in the first round at No. 1 of the Old Course.
