Tyler Mawhinney of Fleming Island and Miles Russell of Jacksonville Beach have stormed into the round of 16 in the U.S. Junior Amateur.
Mawhinney routed Nico Ward of Coraopolis, Pa., 8 and 7 in the second round on July 23 and Russell won his last two holes against Evan Liu of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., to win 4 and 2 at the Saucon Valley Country Club Old Course in Bethlehem, Pa.
They will get a brief respite before returning to the course in the afternoon in their respective attempts to reach the final eight.
Mawhinney, who won four of his first five holes against Ward and the last three, will face the winner of a match between Henry Guan of Irving, Texas and Louis Klein of the Czech Republic at 2:10 p.m.
Russell, who was halved for five holes in a row on the back nine before putting Liu away, will face Reed Arnaldo of Encinitas, Calif., who defeated Hill Wang of Hacienda Heights, Calif., 1-up. Arnaldo is an incoming freshman at the University of San Diego.
