Miles Russell missed the cut in seven of his first eight combined starts in PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour events in 2024 and 2025.
But the 17-year-old Jacksonville Beach native and Florida State verbal commit now has a streak going.
Russell is going for his fourth consecutive weekend showing in a pro event this week when he competes in the Korn Ferry Tour’s UNC Health Championship, at the Raleigh (N.C.) Country Club May 28-31.
Russell made his first PGA Tour cut on March 8 at the Puerto Rico Open, posting four consecutive under-par rounds to tie for 50th at 5-under 283. He has since made two cuts in Korn Ferry Tour starts, highlighted by a career-high tie for 15th at the Club Car Championship in Savannah, with a pair of 67s on his way to a 10-under 278.
Russell then tied for 62nd at the LECOM Suncoast Classic in Lakewood Ranch, at 6-under 278.
The UNC Health Championship will be Russell’s 12th start in a pro event since 2024, when he became the youngest player in history to make the cut in a Korn Ferry Tour event, tying for 20th at the LECOM Classic.
Russell won’t be lacking for First Coast companions in the tournament. Also playing are former University of North Florida stars Nick Gabrelcik, Nick Infanti and Travis Trace, Bartram Trail graduate Julian Suri, two-time PGA Tour winner Russell Knox and last week’s Korn Ferry Tour winner in Knoxville, Doc Redman.
The Senior Players Championship has been played at 14 venues in its 43-year history, all on the East Coast or the Midwest.
It's now heading west.
The PGA Tour announced on May 26 that the 2027 Senior Players will move to the Newport Beach (Calif.) Country Club, with a title sponsorship taken over by Hoag, a regional healthcare delivery system that has sponsored the PGA Tour Champions event in Newport Beach since 1996.
The Senior Players had been at the Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio, since 2019. It was also played for 17 years in Dearborn, Mich., 16 of them at the TPC Michigan; three years at Fox Chapel near Pittsburgh; and the first four years of his history (1983-1986) at the Canterbury Golf Club near Cleveland.
The tournament was at the Sawgrass Country Club in 1987 and the TPC Sawgrass Dye's Valley in 1988 and 1989.
The Senior Players is one of five recognized senior majors, won by 13 members of the World Golf Hall of Fame, including Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Billy Casper, Raymond Floyd, Fred Couples, Ernie Els and Vijay Singh.
The winner of the Senior Players earns an invitation to the next year's Players Championship at the TPC Sawgrass Players Stadium Course.
Newport Beach, designed by William Bell in 1953, is currently the longest-tenured host course on the Champions Tour.
Blades Brown, 19, who was one of Russell’s biggest competitors in junior golf, reached a milestone in his professional career less than two years after he lost to Hamilton Coleman in a playoff at the Junior Players Championship.
With his tie for 14th at last week’s CJ Cup Byron Nelson (he had four rounds in the 60s to finish at 16-under 264), Brown earned conditional PGA Tour membership with 55 non-member FedEx Cup points.
Combined with a pair of top 10s earlier this season (including a solo third at Puerto Rico), Brown surpassed the 199 points earned by the 150th player on the list last year (Matteo Manassero) and now has Special Temporary Membership.
Brown can now accept unlimited sponsor invitations to Tour events for the rest of the calendar year.
However, Brown returns to the Korn Ferry Tour this week in Raleigh. He’s 13th on the points list with six cuts in eight starts, including five top 25 finishes.
“The Korn Ferry Tour is awesome,” the Nashville resident said after his final round in Dallas. “For me, what it's done for me is it's provided me a pathway to the PGA Tour.”
