New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel has heard all of the outside noise involving wide receiver Kayshon Boutte, who is serving out the final year of his rookie contract.
Boutte has been the subject of trade rumors with the team signing Romeo Doubs in free agency and agreeing to a blockbuster trade with the Philadelphia Eagles for All-Pro wide receiver A.J. Brown. Most expected the former sixth-round pick to be on the outs with the team.
In many ways, it initially appeared like he felt the same way after he skipped the spring practices. However, he showed up for mandatory minicamp and training camp. Through two training camp practices, he has made the biggest plays on the offensive side of the ball. Despite all of the outside noise, Boutte has kept his head down and continued to work.
And that hasn't gone unnoticed by Vrabel and the team.
“I’ve got a lot of respect for Kayshon. We went through this last offseason. He had a great offseason, he had a good training camp, and that played out during the season. He was a large part of our success," Vrabel told reporters on Monday. "His communication through this offseason with Todd [Downing] and myself, he’s a pro. He understands what his job is, and he’s gotten off to a good start. So, I’ve got a lot of respect for him for the way that’s he’s handled these different situations, and the conversations outside of here, and the noise that doesn’t effect his performance on the field.”
Boutte has shown in early practices that he can still carve out a major role on offense, even with Brown and Doubs on the roster. Perhaps that would mean more to the Patriots than surrendering one of their best offensive players for a late-round draft pick.
With that said, the current situation might not necessarily be ideal for Boutte, who wants to run up the stat sheet to maximize his value in free agency next year. There are a lot of mouths to feed at receiver in New England, and that could become a major hindrance to his ultimate goal.
