Mar. 20—BEMIDJI — There will be two new Bemidji High School winter sports coaches in 2026-27.

Activities director Kristen McRae announced on Friday afternoon that girls hockey head coach Mike Johnson and girls basketball coach Darin Schultz have each stepped down from their respective positions.

Johnson is retiring after an eight-year stint with the Lumberjacks. He helped BHS

get back to the state tournament

for the first time since 2007 this season. Bemidji

beat Moorhead 4-3

in the Section 8AA championship game.

A

1984 BHS graduate,

Johnson was hired ahead of the 2018-19 season to replace Casey Reieson. He posted a record of 88-107-11, with his first winning season coming in 2022-23. Johnson helped lift the Jacks out of the basement in 8AA and posted four straight seasons above .500 to close out his coaching career.

Under Johnson, BHS hosted its first playoff game since 2015 in 2023. Bemidji has advanced out of the section quarterfinals in each of the last three seasons and won its first section championship since 2007.

With Johnson at the helm, the Lumberjacks snapped multi-decade losing streaks against Warroad and Roseau. Bemidji went 5-0 against the two schools during the 2025-26 season.

Schultz took over the BHS girls basketball program in 2022, replacing former head coach Steve Schreiber. During his four seasons with the Lumberjacks, Schultz posted a record of 44-43.

Despite being a native of East Dubuque, Illinois, Schultz has

had connections to Bemidji for some time.

He was a student assistant on Mike Boschee's staff at Central College in Pella, Iowa, in 2011-12. Boschee is currently the Bemidji State men's basketball team's head coach.

Schultz also spent time on staff at Loras College in Dubuque.

He met his wife, Jamie, while at Loras

before she took a position with the Bemidji State women's basketball team in 2016.

When they moved to Bemidji, Schultz joined the Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys basketball coaching staff for four seasons, including two seasons as head coach from 2018 to 2020.
