Michigan lost, 4-3, in double overtime to the 2-seed Denver Pioneers in April, in the national semifinal of the 2026 NCAA Tournament

Rassey, a Michigan native who is now Harvard's 12th coach in program history, has coached two Hobey Baker Award winners in Ann Arbor, as well as two additional Hobey Baker finalists, among others.

"We welcome Rob Rassey back with open arms and excitement for him to lead Harvard Men's Hockey," said Harvard athletic director Erin McDermott in the release announcing Rassey's hire.

"His belief in the educational and transformational model of college athletics, his proven drive to compete at a consistently high level, and his infectious energy as a leader, rose to the top of a highly competitive field of candidates," McDermott said. "We are proud to have Rob join us and to represent the Harvard Crimson as our next head coach."

Before arriving at Michigan, Rassey spent six seasons as a Harvard assistant, taking part in four NCAA appearances, two ECAC Hockey titles (2015 and 2017) and the 2017 Frozen Four.

He left Harvard in 2019 to become a scout with the Detroit Red Wings.

Additionally, he served as coach and general manager of the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League (USHL) in 2021 before being named coach of the Sioux Falls Stampede.

"I am incredibly excited to be back and to be a part of this program again," Rassey added. "Harvard has always held a special place in my heart, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to help lead the next chapter of the program alongside such talented student-athletes."

Rassey graduated from Northeastern University in Boston, playing four seasons for the Huskies (2006-09). He earned a master's degree from Harvard in 2019.
