Michigan basketball will be without its championship coach.

Per ESPN, the Dallas Maverickshave a deal with former Michigan coach Dusty May, bringing May to an NBA coaching position two months after winning an NCAA title with the Wolverines. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Maverick's second-year star Cooper Flagg was a big incentive for May to make the jump to the professional ranks.

May had a 64-13 record over two seasons at Michigan, winning a Big Ten tournament title in the 2024-25 season, a regular season conference title in 2025-26, and the program's second-ever national championship in April. He was previously reported to have a deal in place with Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel to keep him in Ann Arbor for the foreseeable future, though the details on that agreement were not revealed.

May has been linked with the Mavericks for several weeks, though he wasn't considered the top candidate at the time.

Here's how fans on social media reacted to the big news:

Seriously, WTF re: Dusty May. Why can't we find a coach that stays long-term at Michigan anymore?!? #GoBlue

Hey I’ll give Dusty May credit…. He wasn’t lying when he said he wouldn’t leave Michigan for UNC
