The Michigan Wolverines just won a national title in men's basketball, but the program now needs a new head coach.
Coach Dusty May taking the Dallas Mavericks job on Monday leaves the Wolverines without their championship-winning basketball coach. However, the program shouldn't struggle in finding a suitable replacement... given that Michigan literally just won the men's NCAA tournament in April.
Who could take over in Ann Arbor for May for a team we're sure will contend once again in 2027? We've rounded up some intriguing names to keep an eye on as Michigan searches for a new men's basketball coach.
The former Oklahoma State coach worked with May as one of Michigan's top assistants, overseeing the defensive game plans for the Wolverines. Given his head coaching experience and familiarity with the program, Boynton would be a seamless fit to take over for May... if he doesn't follow him to Dallas, that is.
The Texas Tech men's basketball coach could absolutely make the leap to Michigan; we wonder if the Wolverines try to go for a big fish like McCasland. He was a candidate for the North Carolina job in the spring.
The former Chicago Bulls leader is currently a coaching free agent; could he choose Michigan for his grand return to the pros? The Wolverines have the talent to make another run in March; that could attract a big name like Donovan.
Otzelberger has been a popular name on the coaching carousel for his work with Iowa State for some time now. Michigan is a big job, of course. Could the Wolverines be the team to pry him away from the Cyclones?
McCollum is a fast-rising coaching powerhouse who took Iowa to the Elite Eight this past spring. While he's only been with the Hawkeyes for a year, could he strike while the iron is hot and jump up to Michigan?
