Mets predicted to trade for 1.73 ERA Rangers starting pitcher at deadline originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New York Mets are coming into the 2026 regular season with plenty of hope for success. A postseason berth would not be a surprise whatsoever for this overhauled Mets team.
It wasn't just the lineup that the Mets improved; they added to their bullpen and their rotation. However, they could potentially use one more starting pitcher to pair with Freddy Peralta and Nolan McLean.
With such a need in mind, The Athletic's Jim Bowden predicted that at the 2026 MLB trade deadline, the Mets would make a splash with a trade for a 1.73 ERA starter from the Texas Rangers in righty All-Star Nathan Eovaldi.
Mets predicted to trade for Nathan Eovaldi
"With a year and a half remaining on his contract, starter Nathan Eovaldi is traded by the Rangers to the Mets at the deadline," Bowden predicts.
This scenario for the Mets would be ideal. Being able to pair Eovaldi with McLean and Peralta this season would make for a three-headed trio that could easily make a World Series run.
With depth options in Kodai Senga, David Peterson, Clay Holmes, Sean Manaea, and a few interesting pitchers in the minors, the Mets' rotation would easily be the deepest, and arguably the best in all of baseball.
Last year for the Rangers, the 14th-year veteran Eovaldi, at 35 years old, had a 1.73 ERA in 22 starts with an 11-3 record, 4.4 bWAR, 129 strikeouts, and a 211 ERA+, easily the best of his career.

Eovaldi has been in the Majors for a long time, with his debut coming back in 2011 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He's since played for the Miami Marlins, New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, and Tampa Bay Rays.
He's been with the Rangers the last three seasons, and helped them win their first World Series title in 2023 with a 2.95 ERA in six starts and 36.2 innings in the postseason run. He also helped the Red Sox win the 2018 World Series with a 1.61 ERA in 22.1 innings.
This trade prediction from Bowden is a bold one, and if it were to come true, it wouldn't be cheap for the Mets. Eovaldi is under contract through 2027 on a three-year, $75 million deal.
The Mets would have to give up a lot for him, but he would be a massive pickup to give them a good chance at winning the 2026 World Series.
