There are a lot of teams around Major League Baseball that could use some starting pitching help this season, but the Chicago Cubs might be the one club most in need of a new starter or two.

With the MLB trade deadline closing in, the Cubs have to find a way to add to their rotation this summer by August 3. Fortunately, there are some intriguing options, both as rentals and long-term starting options.

Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers would be fun, but Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report is predicting the Cubs swing a trade with the New York Mets for All-Star starter Freddy Peralta at diminished value thanks to his 4.83 ERA.

Cubs predicted to trade for Mets' Freddy Peralta

"Chicago Cubs (42-37): They'll get Freddy Peralta from the Mets," Rymer predicts. "The righty's value is somewhat suppressed, which is useful for the Cubs after so many years of promotions and trades have thinned out their farm."

This season for the Mets, after being acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers, Peralta has a 4.83 ERA in 16 starts. The reason why his ERA mark looks so bad is that he recently gave up 10 earned runs in 2.2 innings against the Philadelphia Phillies.

But, even with Peralta's shaky play recently, he's someone who would be an upgrade over their current rotation options after countless injuries and poor production.

Matthew Boyd, Edward Cabrera, Jameson Taillon, Ben Brown, Cade Horton, and Justin Steele are all on the injured list right now.

***** Imanaga has a 4.26 ERA this season, while Javier Assad has a 3.89 ERA and Colin Rea has a 4.99 ERA. This is a very bleak rotation setup, which makes the Cubs desperate for starting pitching help.

That's why it would not be a surprise if they went out and traded for Peralta from the Mets. And if he reaches his potential as a frontline starter, as he did with a 2.70 ERA in 2025 with the Brewers, he could be the ace this rotation so desperately needs.

While the Cubs surely would love to add someone like Joe Ryan or Skubal, Peralta, amid his struggles, might be a more reasonably affordable trade option this season.
