Maybe Sunday's early game hugs and handshakes in the bullpen were warranted after all.
The Mets dealt right-handed reliever Huascar Brazoban to the White Sox for right-handed pitching prospects Gabe Davis and Zach Franklin early Monday morning, according to a report by The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.
Brazoban appeared to be a fringe candidate to be traded given his three more years of team control that has him arbitration eligible through 2029. Speculation arose about the 36-year-old's fate when he was caught on camera embracing members of the Mets bullpen early in Sunday's loss.
Brazoban, who has one more minor league option remaining, has been one of the most pleasant surprises for the Mets this season. After earning one of the final spots out of the bullpen in spring training, he has been a versatile weapon with his ability to work in high-leverage, early innings and across multiple innings.
In 46 games this season, Brazoban is 5-2 with a 2.56 ERA and 1.01 WHIP. He has struck out 49 batters in 52⅔ innings.
The 22-year-old Davis is the White Sox's 18th ranked prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. He was a teammate of Nolan McLean and Carson Benge at Oklahoma State before being drafted by the White Sox in the fifth round of last year's MLB Draft. Davis has reached Double-A Birmingham where he is 0-5 with 32 earned runs allowed in 34⅔ innings (8.31 ERA) and 37 strikeouts in 34⅔ innings.
The 27-year-old Franklin, who is unranked in the White Sox's system, is 2-2 with a 4.37 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 60 strikeouts in 45⅓ innings for Triple-A Columbus this season.
