Meet Louisville-area high school boys athlete of the week nominees

The nominees for this week's Courier Journal boys athlete of the week delivered on Louisville-area baseball fields and tennis courts.

Voting is underway for The Courier Journal's boys athlete of the week. The poll closes at 6 p.m. Thursday, and the winner will be announced Friday.

Here are the nominees:

Derek Abrams/Jacob Ray, St. Xavier tennis​

Abrams, a freshman, and Ray, a junior, beat teammates Aditya Shah and Logan Elliott 2-6, 7-6, 10-4 to capture the KHSAA’s boys doubles state championship on May 27.

Carter Hilton, Bullitt East baseball​

Junior allowed three runs and struck out seven over five innings and also went 2 for 4 at the plate with an RBI in the Chargers’ 9-5 victory over Bullitt Central in the Sixth Region Tournament final on May 28.

Charles Lewis, Kentucky Country Day tennis​

Senior beat Covington Catholic’s Brady Hussey 6-4, 6-4 to capture the KHSAA’s boys singles state championship on May 27.

Keith Mitchell, South Oldham baseball​

Junior was 2 for 3 with a triple, three RBIs and two runs in an 11-1 victory over North Oldham in the Eighth Region Tournament final on May 28.

Grayson Willoughby, Trinity baseball​

Senior tossed a three-hit shutout and struck out 10 in a 2-0 victory over St. Xavier in the Seventh Region Tournament final on May 28.
