When I graduated from high school, my career goals were unclear. I didn’t have a job in mind. But there was one area where my passions lied: sports.

I love dissecting the ins and outs of teams, following rising new powerhouses and record-setting new athletes. Sports journalism allowed my career and passions to intertwine.

So, hello!

My name is Jacob Shondel, the new high school sports reporter for The Times-Reporter. I am excited to learn more about your community in the world of high school athletics. But first, a little about me.

I grew up in Akron and attended Coventry High School where I bowled and ran track. This is where my love for sports blossomed. An avid fan of Cleveland teams — yes, even the Browns — I was often the first to break sports news to my friends and family. I have always had the talent for remembering random statistics or fun facts, which I love, including in my writing.

I attended Kent State University, where I majored in journalism. During my time with The Kent Stater (Kent State’s student media), I covered a multitude of sports as Sports Editor. I wrote about lacrosse, soccer, baseball, football and basketball. I covered numerous Mid-American Conference Tournaments, including the 2022-23 Kent State men’s basketball team and their NCAA Tournament appearance, where they lost to Indiana.

I was also fortunate enough to report on the 2023-24 women’s basketball team, who made the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 22 years. I traveled to the University of Notre Dame, where I sat courtside in a full, energetic arena. Although they lost to the Fighting Irish, this experience is one of my favorite memories from my time at Kent State. During my final year, I interned with the Akron Beacon Journal covering the men’s and women’s basketball teams.

Working in sports journalism allows me not to just enjoy sports as a viewer. Through conversations and relationships with coaches and players, I have the opportunity to share the bigger picture.

I look forward to being in your community, sharing your stories and experiencing the Dover-New Philadelphia rivalry for the first time. When you see me on the sidelines, say hello! And don’t be afraid to share the name of your favorite local pizza spot.
