Where Rory McIlroy started Saturday at a furious pace that looked like it was going to give him a comfortable lead heading into Sunday's final round at the Masters, Bryson DeChambeau's torrid last four holes have made Northern Ireland's preeminent golfer's position more precarious.

DeChambeau birdied on three of Augusta National's final four holes Saturday, ending his round with a 3-under-par 69 and putting him at 10-under-par 206 for the weekend, just two strokes back of McIlroy's 12-under-par 204. McIlroy got there with 66s on both Friday and Saturday, helped along by him hitting 3s on each of the first six holes Saturday, making McIlroy the first golfer ever to do so.

Indeed, where McIlroy has been somewhat streaky — those two 66s came after an even-par 72 in Round 1 — DeChambeau has gone 69-68-69 in each of the first three rounds. If he stays in that range, he'll need to see some struggles from McIlroy to claw to the top of the leaderboard and don a green jacket for the first time.

Here's a look at how both players have fared on Sundays at Augusta, and what that might mean for their chances as the Masters wrap up their 2025 edition.

  • 2009: 70 (finished T20)

For McIlroy, the final round of the Masters is rarely any kind of horror show. He has finished plus-or-minus three strokes from par eight out of the 13 times he's played on the weekend. He's finished four or more strokes better than par three times. And he has finished four strokes over par just twice, in 2011 and 2012.

2011, of course, remains the most haunting year for McIlroy. He entered the final round at 12-under-par 204, four strokes ahead of second place. What followed was a complete meltdown in which he shot 8-over-par 80 for the day, his worst round to date. 14 years later, he's looking to exorcise those demons.

  • 2024: 73 (finished T6)
  • 2023: Missed cut
  • 2022: Missed cut
  • 2021: 75 (finished T46)
  • 2020: 73 (finished T34)
  • 2019: 70 (finished T29)
  • 2018: 71 (finished T38)
  • 2016: 72 (finished T21)

DeChambeau is, of course, at a different point in his career from McIlroy. He also, historically, has finished right around par on the final day.

Most recently, DeChambeau shot a 73 on the final day to finish tied for sixth after entering the final round four strokes back from leader Scottie Scheffler.

Now, he has a chance to come back from two strokes to take on McIlroy.

Both golfers have been fairly steady on Sundays, but one of them will have to be outstanding to win. There's also the field to contend with. Corey Conners, Patrick Reed, and Ludvig Åberg all sit within striking distance. But for the moment, all eyes are going to be on McIlroy vs DeChambeau as each tries to win their first green jacket and McIlroy seeks the career grand slam.
