The No. 2-ranked Mason girls basketball team defeated San Augustine 43-22 in the Class 2A Division I state semifinal at Mumford High School on Monday.

Mason (40-1) led from start to finish against the Lady Wolves (28-10) and by double digits for most of the game. With the win, the Cowgirls advanced to the state championship game for the first time in program history.

Mason went to the state semifinal game three-straight seasons from 2018 to 2020 but never advanced to the state championship.

Led by Anna Marie Whitworth’s 21.4 points per game and 10.1 rebounds, the Cowgirls finished as undefeated district champions and are on an unprecedented 31-game winning streak. Their only loss came against Ozona 44-38 in late November.

Whitworth recently surpassed 2,000 career points and 1,100 rebounds as a member of the Cowgirls basketball team. The 6-foot-2 power forward received college offers from Angelo State University, Houston Christian, Ouachita Baptist and D’Youville.

Flora Appleton is the team’s second leading scorer at 13.2 points, adding 4.9 rebounds and 2.3 steals. Senior Ainsley Burns also hit a double-digit scoring average at 10.2 points and dished 2.7 assists.

Mason will face the winners of the state semifinal game between No. 1 Panhandle and No. 3 Cisco. The Cowgirls have spent much of the season sandwiched between Panhandle and Cisco in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches state-wide Class 2A rankings.

The Class 2A Division I state championship will be held at the Alamodome in San Antonio at 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 5.
