The Canyon and Gruver Independent School Districts have plenty to celebrate, despite athletics being in the offseason.

Canyon High School finished among the top programs in Texas, along with some other Panhandle programs, in the final UIL Lone Star Cup standings, which recognize the state's top overall athletic and academic programs.

Canyon placed second in the Class 4A standings with 100 points, three points shy of first-place Comal, while Gruver tied for runner-up with Mason in Class 2A.

They are the champions: Canyon boys, girls win UIL state track team titles

The UIL Lone Star Cup is awarded to one school in each UIL classification based on success in district and state competition across athletics and academics. The winning school in each classification receives the UIL Lone Star Cup trophy and a $1,000 scholarship.

Canyon had a stellar season that included securing 10 points in team tennis, boys cross country, girls cross country and girls basketball. The school also claimed championships in boys and girls track and field, but the Lady Eagles took home nine points.


Gruver was tied for second in the Class 2A standings with Mason at 66 points. Gruver netted 12 points for a deep postseason runs in boys and girls basketball, while football and baseball tallied 10 points. Girls cross country ended with eight points, while boys cross country took home six.

In the 1A standings, Nazareth placed third with 51 points.
