Marshfield's McGriff races to second-place finish at state

Marshfield’s Carter McGriff finished second in the 100-yard butterfly at the Class 4A-3A-2A-1A state championships on Saturday in Beaverton.

McGriff improved on his time from Friday’s preliminaries, finishing in 1 minutes and 2.72 seconds.

Philomath’s Lucas Brandt won the event, finishing in 1:00.16.

McGriff was one of a handful of Marshfield and North Bend athletes who had advanced to Saturday’s finals in the meet at the Tualatin Hills Recreation Center.

Marshfield’s Isaac Singer was sixth in the 500 freestyle, finishing in 5:34.03.

The Pirates finished third in the 200 medley relay, with the quartet of McGriff, Hunter Cowan, Alex Dunning and Martin Crook finishing in 1:47.62.

For North Bend, Noah Bustamente was fourth in the 50 freestyle in 22.89 and sixth in the 100 freestyle in 51.77.

For the girls, Marshfield’s Avery Bartholomew was fourth in the 50 freestyle (25.52) and fifth in the 100 freestyle (57.57). Teammate Lily Thompson was sixth in the 200 individual medley (2:29.54).

Both Marshfield and North Bend advanced to the final in the 400 freestyle relay.

Marshfield finished third with the team of Thompson, Audry Petley, Ella Croson and Bartholomew timed in 3:57.44. North Bend was sixth, the group of Clarissa Abrahamsen, Melina Harbolt, Mira Muth-Vu and Morgan Ryback finishing in 4:05.81.

Marshfield was seventh in the boys team race and ninth for the girls. North Bend was 19th for the boys and 18th for the girls.

Newport swept the team titles. Cascade Christian, Klamath Union and Molalla took second through fourth for the boys and La Grane, Valley Catholic and Catlin Gabel were second through fourth for the girls.
