North Bend’s Raleigh Collier was a state champion and several other athletes from the South Coast placed in the Middle School Meet of Champions, the unofficial state championships for middle school track and field in Oregon.
Collier, an eighth-grader in North Bend, won the 800 meters with a new best of 2 minutes and 6.94 seconds, edging out Gus VandenHeuvel of Whisper Running Club of Vancouver, Wash.
Collier also was seventh in the 1,500 with another new best, 4:22.08. James Fullerton of Grant Cluster in Portland won the race in 4:12.69, nearly six seconds faster than the runner-up.
Tyler Camp of Azalea in Brookings also was a champion, winning the 100-meter hurdles in 14.05, also a new best. Camp was third in the 200 hurdles in 26.64. North Bend’s Jacob Bates was 11th (29.17).
Marshfield’s Gavin Simpson was fourth in the 100 meters with a time of 11.90 seconds after running a new best 11.70 in the preliminaries. Simpson also was sixth in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 6 inches.
Marshfield’s Owen Fisher was seventh in the 400 (55.00). He also was seventh in the long jump (18-4 ¼).
Marshfield also was fourth in the 4x100 relay with the team of Simpson, Fisher, Austin Cain and Brody McNally (47.58). In the 4x400 relay, the Pirates were 10th, the same quartet running 3:52.72.
In the field events, Myrtle Point’s David Huff was fourth in the aero javelin with a throw of 153 feet, 6 inches. Desmond Hansen of Holy Trinity in Portland had an impressive winning throw of 198-1, nearly 26 feet better than second place.
North Bend’s Blake Parra was sixth in the pole vault, clearing 8 feet. Teammate Bo Harnden was eighth (7-6).
For the girls, Leila Newman of Azalea was 10th in the 800 (2:28.47) and 22nd in the 1,500 (5:11.17). Katherine Kessi of Scappoose had impressive winning times in each race, 2:18.48 in the 800 and 4:38.64 in the 1,500. Teammate Margaret Paul, a seventh-grader, was second to Kessi in the 1,500 and won the 3,000 in 10:13.73.
Coquille’s Vivian Westgaard was 19th in the 400 (1:04.16).
Marshfield’s Calli McGriff was 23rd in the 200 (28.26). Teammate Claire Blanc was 16th in the 200 hurdles (32.71). The Pirates were 18th in the 4x100 relay with the team of McGriff, Blanc, Sadie Green and Lucy Seedborg (53.67) and 16th in the 4x400 with a squad of Blank, Seedborg, Scarlett Devins and Dizzy Smith (4:29.58).
North Bend’s Kaiyan Carter was part of a tie for fifth in the pole vault, clearing 7 feet. The winner, Brynn Kleinke of the Arts and Technology Academy in Eugene won with a mark of 11-6, which was better than the boys champion. Brynn’s older sister, Addison, became a four-time state champion for Churchill at the high school level last month.
