Let's overreact to the Steelers' quarterback pecking order at first OTAs practice originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
We now have a 100% certain answer for how the Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback depth chart will go for the 2026 season after the very first practice of OTAs.
Just kidding, it's way too early for that. All we can say for sure is that Aaron Rodgers is the team's starter. Everything else after him is a question mark.
But we perhaps got some insight into how things are at least starting off as OTAs began in Pittsburgh on Monday morning.
After getting the first reps, Rodgers gave way to second-year quarterback Will Howard, who then turned it over to veteran Mason Rudolph, who then turned it over to rookie Drew Allar.
"After Aaron Rodgers took first team reps, Will Howard was QB2. Mason Rudolph was QB3, and Drew Allar was QB4," ESPN's Brooke Pryor noted.
While we definitely would not say this pecking order is set in stone, it makes sense for the Steelers to go this route from the outset.
It’s early. Very early.
But on May 18, four months before the season kicks off, Will Howard took the QB2 reps behind Aaron Rodgers during the period open to the media.

Pittsburgh must find out what it has in its young quarterbacks, Howard and Allar, before they navigate what is expected to be a strong 2027 draft class.
Adding to that, the Steelers have to figure out if Howard can be a reliable QB2 behind Rodgers so they can cut Rudolph in order to avoid carrying four quarterbacks.
Allar is probably going to be a zero in his first year, as the Steelers are developing him from the ground up, so Howard being capable of stepping in to keep the Steelers afloat is crucial.
