As Pittsburgh Steelers training camp ramps up at Saint Vincent College, head coach Mike McCarthy is taking a calculated approach to managing veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Rather than maxing out the veteran’s snaps early, Pittsburgh is placing Rodgers on a deliberate rep count, a strategy designed to preserve his arm while providing critical evaluation snaps for the backup competition.
"Aaron's 42 years old," McCarthy said when addressing the quarterback room's workload. "We're going to be smart with a rep count this first week. I think that's clearly the right way to go there. So there'll be plenty of reps for the other three."
McCarthy projected that Rodgers will take roughly "40-50% of the reps" during the opening phase of camp. That intentional reduction directly impacts the depth chart behind him, which is now topped by Mason Rudolph leading the second-team unit.
"Mason will take the first reps when Aaron's done," McCarthy clarified regarding the rotation behind Rodgers. "Will [Howard] and Drew [Allar] will get those reps with the second group. But, you know, Mason will take he'll take the first reps when Aaron's done."
While casual observers might read into early lineup order, McCarthy emphasized that distributing snaps across all four passers is about holistic room development rather than a fixed early-camp hierarchy.
"We're going to develop the quarterback room," McCarthy explained. "I know that may sound like philosophy, mumbo jumbo, but that's the reality of it. I mean, if you watch the quarterback school, there's a lot of reps that this quarterback group will go through. I feel very confident that we'll give all four of those guys a chance to make this team."
By balancing Rodgers' seasonal longevity with valuable live-team reps for Rudolph and the younger passers, McCarthy ensures Pittsburgh builds both short-term starter readiness and long-term room stability.

Mike McCarthy said that Aaron Rodgers will be on a 'pitch count' this week and the reps between Rudolph, Howard, and Allar will be pretty even.
