Aaron Rodgers has been locked in as the Steelers' starting quarterback since he re-signed with the team in May, but an interesting quarterback battle continues to brew behind him.

With Mason Rudolph, Will Howard and rookie Drew Allar all on the roster, GM Omar Khan and coach Mike McCarthy have decisions to make this summer about how to align their quarterback room behind the four-time MVP.

If McCarthy's comments on Thursday are any indication, Allar is making quite a first impression.

McCarthy told SB Nation's Jarrett Bailey that Allar has made some impressive throws each say since camp began.

"He’s doing what you want from a young player," McCarthy said. "These are tough practices because you’re not just repeating concepts. There hasn’t been a day where he hasn’t made a throw that makes you say, 'Okay, that’s a young man taking a step.'"

Allar has been working as the Steelers' No. 4 quarterback early in training camp, but the third-round pick seems to be holding his own to this point and will get his first opportunity to make an impact in a game when the Steelers host the Packers in their preseason opener on Aug. 13.

The Steelers listed Rudolph as their No. 2 quarterback on their unofficial depth chart Wednesday, followed by Howard and Allar.

Rodgers' status as the Steelers' starter isn't in question, but the battle to back him up is a storyline of training camp with the veteran Rudolph trying to hold off Howard and Allar.

Rudolph was a favorite of Mike Tomlin, but the arrival of a new staff and the potential emergence of Howard and Allar could make him expendable. Howard has a year of experience behind Rodgers under his belt, while Allar is the only one of the trio of quarterbacks brought in after McCarthy was hired.

The Steelers will have until Aug. 30 to decide how many quarterbacks to keep.
