The Raiders family is a real thing. Sometimes it's a literal thing. Thursday the Raiders signed TE Qadir Ismail. And if that name sounds familiar to you, it should. He is the son of former NFL receiver Qadry Ismail and nephew of Raiders legend Raghib "Rocket" Ismail.
Rocket Ismail was a fourth round draft choice by the Raiders out of Notre Dame in the 1991 NFL Draft. He spent five years with the Raiders, where his nickname was earned mostly by his work as a return specialist.
Qadir went undrafted last year out of Samford and signed with his dad's former team -- the Baltimore Ravens. Now he joins his uncle's former team, joining the Raiders.
The former college wide receiver didn't make the Ravens roster out of camp, but spent six weeks on the team's practice squad. You can see why he is seen as a tight end at the NFL level instead of a wide receiver like his dad and uncle. Qadry and Raghib. The elder Ismails were 6-0 and 5-11 respectively. While Qadir is a towering 6-7, 232 pounder.
Qadir played six seasons of college ball. First at Villanova (2018-21) and then Samford (2022-23). All told, he appeared in 26 career games, including three games (one start) at quarterback as a freshman at Villanova before moving to wide receiver. As a senior at Samford in in 2023, Ismail appeared in 11 games and recorded 13 receptions for 135 yards (10.5 avg.).
