LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Back in April, former Lansing Everett boys and girls basketball coach Johnny Jones died at the age of 75.
Jones led the girls basketball program to back-to-back state championships in 2000 and 2001, and then led the boys basketball program to a state championship in 2004.
On Tuesday, during halftime of Lansing Everett’s game against Lansing Eastern, the Vikings revealed a banner that will hang in the gym and honor Jones.
Johnny’s wife, Bettie, was in attendance to see the banner revealed as well as Johnny’s older brother, Freddie, who spoke to those in attendance.
On top of the banner, Lansing Everett plans to have the court named after Johnny Jones, which is a great honor for the Jones family.
“That’s wonderful that they felt they needed to honor him with unveiling his banner,” Freddie Jones said. ‘I’ll be so proud when they have the name on the floor because that is going to be an even more special tribute to him.”
Lansing Everett coach Trey Adams said, “To add the banner is just another testament to coach Jones and how many people he’s touched over the years.”
The Vikings went on to beat Lansing Eastern on Tuesday night, 66-54, for their third straight victory.
