On a team with several future college players, most notably Texas signee Cooper Webb, James Tudor may not be the first name to come to mind when one thinks of Lake Travis baseball.
But that may have changed after Tuesday.

Tudor, a junior shortstop in his first year on varsity for Lake Travis, had a night to remember after going 3-for-3 with a triple, two doubles and six RBIs as the Cavs routed rival Westlake 11-1 in six innings in a District 26-6A contest at Westlake High School.
“I was just seeing the ball well, and when I got down in the count, I was just trying to work the other way,” Tudor said. “I slapped some (pitches) hard over (to right field) on a line, found gaps and used my speed to get around the bases.”
Tudor’s bases-clearing triple highlighted the Cavs’ four-run second inning that broke open a 1-1 tie. He hit an RBI double in the fourth and ripped a two-run double the next inning as Lake Travis eventually built a double-digit lead.
“It feels great to do that, especially against (Westlake),” he said. “Their student section is loud and their dugout is loud, and that’s what we thrive off of. We like adversity and like to fight through it.”
The offense Tudor provided was plenty for Webb, who rarely needs more than a couple of runs to give the Cavs a win. He struck out eight in five innings, only gave up two hits and worked around three walks and a hit batter.
“I was pretty juiced coming into the rivalry game but had to make some adjustments, especially (early on),” Webb said. “I just competed and got through it. … (On the strikeouts) it’s really just throwing strikes, commanding the ball and setting up pitches to get them.”
The Cavs (16-9-1, 6-1) finished with nine walks, Yanuell Molina went 2-for-3 and Daniel Womack retired the side in the sixth, but the contest was really about Tudor’s hitting.
Lake Travis coach Ryan Rogers lauded Tudor’s work ethic and preparation.
“He’s spent a lot of time in the cages and fine-tuning his swing,” Rogers said. “He had a good approach, and that’s what happens when you trust the process and stick to the plan.”
The two teams meet again Friday at Lake Travis, when the Cavs will have a chance to take full control of the district, considering they’ll be done with district heavyweights Dripping Springs, Bowie and the Chaps.
“This was big, because anytime you win Game 1, it kind of sets the tone,” Rogers said. “Our guys want to win a district championship, and winning the first game of this series was part of it to give ourselves a chance at that.”
Westlake (12-16, 5-2), which played a brutal nondistrict schedule against teams mainly from the Metroplex, was led by hits from August Collard and Mateo Rincon.
