Lake Travis and Wimberley joined four other Central Texas high school baseball teams in advancing to the regional finals of the UIL playoffs Saturday with Game 3 wins in their best-of-three regional semifinals series.
Cedar Ridge, Dripping Springs, Cedar Park and Rouse all won their series Friday.
Here’s the Saturday roundup for the Austin area.
Lake Travis 6, Laredo United South 0
Daniel Womack threw a three-hit shutout and Elliot Su ripped a two-run double as the Cavs returned to the Class 6A Division I regional finals for the second straight year.
“Anytime you win and move on, you’re going to be happy,” Lake Travis coach Ryan Rogers said. “Womack was huge and gave us exactly what we needed. We came in knowing he was going to throw a lot of strikes, and he was always around the strike zone.”
Womack, a junior, may not be as well known on a pitching staff that includes Cooper Webb, CJ Hansford and Luke McBride. But it’s the second consecutive series he’s earned the win in a Game 3 after doing the same in the area round against San Antonio Johnson.
“He was really good for us in tournaments, and then when you get to the district season you kind of run out of innings for some of these guys,” Rogers said. “He was outstanding today and has a bright future ahead of him.”
Ethan Schlotterback hit an RBI double and eventually stole home, Yanuell Molina had a run-scoring single and Kyle Brauchle hit a sacrifice fly in other notable offense for the Cavs.
“We had much better at-bats (Saturday),” Rogers said. “And for Su to get the two-run double in the second inning really helped us settle in and relax. That’s what we had been waiting for the whole weekend was the big hit. … Hitting is contagious, and we were kind of off and going from there.”
Wimberley 5, Sinton 3
Jacob Abrusley threw two innings of no-hit relief, Jayden Hall provided a quality start with four strikeouts in five innings and Santana Raye hit a two-run single as the Texans advanced in Class 4A Division II.
Both teams scored three runs in the first inning, with Abrusley drawing a walk with the bases loaded to drive in a run for Wimberley before Raye’s big hit.
Jake Dewell walked with the bases loaded in the fifth and Cannon Couch hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth for the Texans’ final two runs.
Sage Hall went 2-for-4 with a run scored in other notable offense for Wimberley.
